You have been asked to serve as a consultant for a child care program to help the teachers deal with the childrens behaviors. On your first observation, you note that time-out is constantly used as a way of dealing with all misbehaviors. Children spend up to a half hour at a time removed from the activity of the class by angry teachers. In addition, there are often three or four children at a time in time-out. Discuss any reasons you might have concern over this situation. What guidelines would you give the teachers to help them use time-out more effectively?

ANS: A direct concern should be given regarding the length, time and location of time out. The standard guidance should be given one minute for each year of the child. Time out should be limited and be developmentally appropriate.
