Professional associations:
  International Reading Association (IRA):
  National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)
  National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS)
  American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
Types of activities:
  Goal is not for families to formally teach, but rather to encourage, listen, react, praise, guide, monitor and discuss
  Activities would include game nights, home activities, strategies throughout the day
  Impact on childrens approaches to learning, important for academic success

Answer to Question 2

It is the basis of oral language as families interact with their young children. Even when children are speaking English at school, it is beneficial for parents to assist in their literacy development in their home language. It is deleterious to literacy development if families limit their interactions fearing that home language will confuse the child.
