Answer to Question 1

Early childhood teachers will assist families in understanding that children think differently than adults, thus their learning activities will be concrete and activity oriented. Teachers will help parents to understand that children construct their own knowledge as they interact with their environment. Emphasis will be on play with attention to the meaning of theory of mind as well as limitations such as egocentrism and centration. Teachers can offer this information through examples that are familiar to parents to increase their understanding.

Answer to Question 2

Since family members may not feel confident with the idea of learning at home, educators must know about their students rich cultural heritages as this is a way to know about each familys funds of knowledge. Building collaborative learning at home activities that include such knowledge will support families in their encouragement of childrens learning at home.
