Answer to Question 1

They are a method based on behaviorist theory, which tells us that when behaviors are followed by a pleasant response, they are likely to be repeated. They work best when children are first tying out new ways of functioning. The behavior should be immediately followed by praise, a treat, or special privileges.

Answer to Question 2

It is not punishment, but a forceful way to stop behavior. To be effective in changing behavior, the method has to be related to the specific behavior to be changed.
