Some children have difficulty entering and participating in play. There are a variety of ways a teacher can help these children. If the teacher determines the need to enter the play, there are four different ways this can be accomplished. Name four and briefly describe how the technique works.

Answers will vary.
1. Parallel Play  Teacher is near the child but does not participate in the childs play. Can model or provide ideas.
2. Co-Play  The teacher becomes the player with the child but follows his or her lead. She exits the play when no longer needed.
3. Play Tutor  The teacher assumes the leadership role in the play. He or she guides, scaffolds, and communicates to the child, which leads to higher level play.
4. Spokesperson for Reality  In this play the teacher adds statements that extend or stop the play.
