The advantages of pea gravel include: readily available, relatively inexpensive, long- lasting, doesn't attract animals, relatively easy installation, and drains quickly. The disadvantages include: the need to replenish it periodically, it may become compact in winter if it becomes wet and freezes, it requires a containment barrier, it is not wheelchair accessible, it is not recommended with children under age 5 years (they may throw pebbles or place them into their nose, ears or mouth), and it can be slippery if scattered on concrete.
