A number of factors may increase children's risk of developing anemia, including food insufficiency; unhealthy dietary habits; inadequate iron intake; chronic health conditions such as sickle cell disease, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, leukemia, lead poisoning and cancer; radiation and chemotherapy; and, some medications. Observable signs of anemia include excessive fatigue, pallor, irritability, headache, shortness of breath, learning problems, nausea and appetite loss, sore/swollen tongue, and growth failure.
