Answer to Question 2
There are several basic development issues that can affect maltreated children throughout their lives. Neurodevelopment may be impaired and can cause decreases in brain size and function. This can, in turn, lead to lower IQs and poor school performance. Psychosocial development can also be affected. Children who are abused often have either too little or too much control over their emotions, which limits their ability to effectively interact with others. Too often, those who have been abused as children turn to drugs and alcohol to mask their pain, anger, and confusion. Early intervention can save many children from a life full of social difficulties, diminished capacity, and lowered emotional competency.
