Answer to Question 1

If there are agreed upon designated responsibilities for professionals during an emergency, teachers would know in advance what they are to do and how they are to perform to help lessen the impact of the emergency. Such organization can maximize emergency response and minimize and manage risk.

Answer to Question 2

Children often have emotional consequences as a result of being in an emergency situation or even viewing one. Talk with children about their feelings, letting them lead the way in discussing how they feel. This may help them to understand that they are not the only ones who may be scared. Reassurance and physical closeness will help. Children should be encouraged to talk and express their concerns and fears. Providing routines gives children a sense of comfort and some predictability. Teachers can provide opportunities that are beneficial to healing, such as playing with water, sand, or play-dough.
