Answer to Question 1

In early years the child's brain is making important connections. The development of brain circuitry can be disrupted when a child is stressed by the built environment. This can lead to an inability to cope that can affect learning and behavior. Some negative consequences of a child's built environment can be counteracted with opportunities for active play in a nature-filled space, which helps to improve brain development and overall health.

Answer to Question 2

The playgrounds should include low platforms with few access points, crawl areas, ramps with places for grasping, low tables for manipulation, tricycle paths, sand areas with covers, and short slides and swings, if they are low to the ground.
