ANSWER: (1) Following S.A.F.E. guidelines means supervision, age-appropriate, fall surface and equipment maintenance.
Supervision: Actively engaging in learning experiences with infants and toddlers to support their play and provide necessary redirection to prevent injuries.
Age-appropriate: All equipment should be designed for the age of the children using it.
Provide extra supervision as necessary.
Fall surface: Place climbing structures closer to the ground; mount them over 9-12 inches of uncompressed shock-absorbing materials, and have enough space for each child using the playground to move around. Be careful of traffic patterns.
Equipment maintenance: All pieces of equipement, indoors and outdoors, should be examined daily to ensure that they are functioning properly and pose no hazards to children.
