Accent  the beat that gets the strongest emphasis in the music as in one two, three four, or one two three, one two three. Example: Have children clap on the accented syllable in poems and rhymes.
Beat  the regular rhythmic pattern of the music. There are strong beats
(downbeats) and weak beats (upbeats). Example: Have children shake a rattle or tap a drum in time to a piece of music.
Harmony  a sequence of tones that enriches a melody and makes the sounds blend. Harmony is often created by using chordsseveral notes played together at the same time. Example: Have children explore tonal instruments and identify sound combinations they like.
Mood  the way a particular combination of music elements affects the
listener. Example: Have children paint as they listen to different styles of music.
Tempo  the speed at which a rhythm or musical piece is played. Example:

Timbre  the unique quality of a sound. Example: Play a hidden instrument and have children try to guess which instrument it is.
