Answer to Question 2

Pro: Why Food Can Be Used for Art
Many traditional adult art materials, such as egg tempera and casein paint, are made from food products.
Some modern art materials, such as play dough and white glues, are made from food products.
It is easier to determine the ingredients in food products than in real art supplies.
Food items are readily available at the supermarket. Sometimes it is hard to find safe art supplies.
There is no need to worry if children put their hands into their mouths after using food-based art materials.
Art activities that use food products provide a multisensory experience in which children can use all their senses in a safe way.
Children learn to appreciate the aesthetic qualities of the foods such as the pattern inside of an apple.
Food used as art can be utilized to relate the activity to the theme of the class, such as making apple prints when reading about Johnny Appleseed.
Children are motivated by food and have a lot of fun doing these activities. Con: Food Should Never Be Used in Art Activities
Many children are severely allergic to some food items, such as milk, wheat, soy, eggs, and
peanuts.
Most traditional art materials are not food based, such as crayons, chalk, and paper.
Food products used in commercial art supplies are usually inedible residues, such as sour milk or whey.
With a little research, teachers can determine the ingredients of all art supplies.
Safe, commercial art supplies for children are widely marketed in department stores and
drugstores, and through catalogs. Also, many free, found items can be used.
Children become confused when they are told that they can eat one art material but not another one that seems similar.
The aesthetic qualities of food should be investigated in cooking activities, not art.
Food is expensive and should not be wasted.
Many food/art projects involve sugary foods and reinforce poor eating habits.
People are hungry in our country and all over the world. Many children do not have enough to eat. It is cruel to have them make projects with food that could have fed them.
Some ethnic groups are offended if food that is valued by them is used for play and not shown respect.
