The preoperational period is the second stage of cognitive development in Piaget's theory, which begins with the achievement of object permanence and is marked by the acquisition of representational skills in the areas of mental imagery, and especially language. This stage is typified by imaginative play, egocentricity, the inability to take another person's point of view, and the belief that the number or amount is changed when objects are rearranged.
