Answer to Question 1

ANSWER:
Unobtrusive means being inconspicuous, remaining in the background while observing. It is a good idea because you will see more spontaneous, naturally occurring behavior if you stay out of the play situation itself, so that you are not a factor in the behavior. By staying unobtrusive you are close enough to observe, but do not interrupt the children you are watching.

Answer to Question 2

ANSWER:
Problems and solutions in observing and recording are:
A.
Reschedule the day to include choice or free play time, and assign one adult the job of observing and recording (filling in as needed in urgent or emergency situations).
B.
Have teachers compare notes and see biases revealed; have staff take observation courses; have more than one adult record an incident or behavior to compare what is seen.
C.
Be more unobtrusive with your observing and recording; consider watching without note-taking for some time; talk to children about note-taking without revealing the contents of the notes.
D.
Address the problem directly; establish policies and procedures for confidentiality, and publish them for staff and parents; if the issue is staff talking about their observations inappropriately, talk to each person and then everyone together; if the issue is notes being left out, consider suspending note-taking for a period and providing small notebooks that fit in pockets.
