Answer to Question 1

ANSWER:
Handle any rejection immediately with support for the child who was rejected; make it clear to the other(s) that this type of behavior will not be permitted. Help children recognize how they are different and how they are alike in positive and nonjudgmental terms. Alleviate the fears of those children who seem afraid of children who are different from them by talking to them and understanding their concerns. Answer all questions simply, truthfully, and honestly. Use childrens own curiosity to further the conversation. Let the child who is being rejected answer as many questions as possible or appropriate. Actively foster acceptance and respect for the individual.

Answer to Question 2

ANSWER:
According to government statistics, classrooms are populated with an increasing number of children who are culturally and linguistically different from one another and, most likely, from their teachers. Unless teachers are informed and educated about these differences, they may misinterpret a childs ability, learning, and needs. Teachers may mistake them for slow learners or treat them as though they have a disability. Parents may be unfamiliar with schooling in this country and of the expectations teachers may have of them regarding their children. Informed and supportive teachers can help parents and their children succeed only if they consider the implications of these demographics.
