Support childrens attempts to communicate.

Maintain an additive philosophy.

Provide a stimulating, active, and diverse environment.

Use informal observations.

Find out about the family.

Provide an accepting classroom climate.

Helping children get ready to read can include:

promoting meaningful interactions with words, such as writing names of their drawings

providing age-appropriate activities, such as lotto games

offering activities that are fun and encouraging children to interact with print, such as making a class newsletter

taking a gradual approach through the use of nonreading materials, such as labeling toy boxes with pictures (and words later)

acknowledging childrens abilities to read the environment and other people, such as a child who reads the sky to predict the weather

involving childrens senses, such as displaying materials along with a picture or storybook

reading to children regularly

helping children hear language sounds (phonemes) through oral language activities, such as rhyming, fingerplays, and songs

filling the environment with the printed word, such as labeling common items, and displaying childrens stories and dictations
