In order to identify the many smells in the world:
 
  a. humans have a separate receptor for each smell.
  b. humans have only one type of receptor which binds to all odorants and then the higher order processing in the brain determines the smell.
  c. humans have different receptors that bind to different odorants and the activity patterns created by these bindings are what is interpreted as different smells.
  d. humans have two receptor types, one for irritant odors and one for pleasant odors.
