This 16-year-old female high school softball player fell down a flight of stairs and sustained significant trauma to her right leg. X-rays revealed closed fracture of the femur and tibia of the right leg. During the hospitalization both fractures were reduced at the same time. An external fixator was placed to the thigh, and she will be seen in the fracture clinic in two days. As the patient was getting ready to leave, she stated that she had been feeling depressed lately. There was no psychiatric consultant available, so an appointment was made for her to see Dr. Smith, psychiatrist, on the same day she returns to the fracture clinic.
