Answer to Question 1

Since drug B has no effect on sleep by itself and the 30 mg dose of drug A when combined with the dose of drug B produces effects greater than the effects induced by 30 mg of drug A alone, this would indicate that we are observing potentiation, a form of synergism.

Answer to Question 2

A compound with some of the discriminable qualities of a test drug whose clinical properties are being evaluated, but without the specific clinical properties of the test drug. The efficacy of the active placebo is then compared with that of the test drug.
