Why should the nurse caring for a patient in hypovolemic shock avoid a hypotonic solution for fluid resuscitation?
◦ Because hypotonic solutions move quickly into the interstitial spaces and can cause third spacing.
◦ Because hypotonic solutions need a smaller bore needle to run at a slower rate to keep the intravascular space low.
◦ Because hypotonic solutions stay longer to expand the intravascular space but deplete intracellular fluid levels.
◦ Because hypotonic solutions do not stay in the intravascular space long enough to expand the circulating blood volume.
