ISIS seeks to eliminate the geographic borders and nations that were created in the Middle East by the Western powers after World War I.  In place of these nation-states, ISIS wants to re-establish a caliphate (an ancient Muslim ideal of a pure Islamic state governed by Sharia law), and restore the original borders of the Ottoman Empire.
