Michael Kaye, through his Costa Rica Expeditions, offered locally based tourism experiences ranging from white water rafting to museums and churches which was a distinctive choice other than traditional group tourism revolving around mass tourism experiences. He advocated that tourism should contribute to, rather than exploit, the land and support local cultural traditions. This provided an important foundation for the ongoing collaboration between tourism, conservation, and locally based economic activities.

Economies of scale reflect decreasing unit costs that usually accrue to large-size operations. In the cruise line industry, larger ships have lower unit costs than smaller ones.
