The GAO investigated the GDSs to see whether their tight oligopolistic structure (four firms controlling the bulk of sector sales) gave them undue pricing power over the travel and tourism suppliers.

The Marriott chain had its origin in root beer stands opened by J. Willard Marriott and his wife in the late 1920s, which they expanded into the Hot Shoppe restaurant chain. Hotels came a little later and Marriott remains one of the biggest hotel company in the world.
