Unlike the lodging industry, the airlines are not able to differentiate its product which essentially is a seat between points A and B. Consequently, the airline product has become an undifferentiated commodity despite the wide unit cost differential between the low-cost and network carriers. This has meant rampant price competition as opposed to the milder product competition in the highly segmented lodging industry with its recognizable product differentiation from economy to luxury properties.
