If travel and tourism companies wanted to do without any external distribution channels, they would have to do all of the selling themselves. This would involve greatly expanding their in-house (Web site and 800 call center) reservations capability.

As outlined in the chapter, the key characteristics are perishable product, fixed capacity, variable demand, segmented markets, and appropriate cost structure.
