For over 25 years, foreign spending in the United States has exceeded U.S. spending abroad for travel and tourism. This reflects higher traveling populations among foreign countries compared to the United States and the relative popularity of U.S. attractions which has benefited from the spread of American sights and sounds worldwide through movies and music.

It is said that an ostrich puts its head in the sand to avoid acknowledging problems. Airlines who ignored the disruptions that followed deregulation were said to have taken the ostrich approach.
