Since travel and tourism has an especially high leisure component, and leisure activity is usually not deemed a necessary consumption item which is postponable, consumers can cut back on vacation spending but not on food, clothing, energy consumption, transportation, and other items that are necessary to daily living.

Charles Lindbergh's trip raised expectations of long-distance air travel to the public and spurred aircraft companies to invest more resources toward new aircraft development.
