Domestic U.S. airlines are protected from foreign competition by cabotage laws, which forbid non-U.S. carriers from picking up and transporting passengers to a final U.S. destination. Given that the United States, for the most part, practices free trade with regard to imports and exports, there is little justification for such protection.
