Answer 1

Conservation of natural and cultural assets involves implementing policies that serve to protect the integrity and quality of these assets. In contrast, exposing such assets to tourism development can lead to changing assets in a manner that is objectionable to conservationists. Consider the adoption of an open park policy that allows visitors to visit conservation areas. From the perspective of conservationists, this can lead to unwanted and difficult-to-control impacts. On the other hand, growth in the number of fee-paying tourists to a protected park area can contribute to more funds being available for conservation initiatives. Too many visitors to a natural area can lead to a decline in quality. Recent efforts by the U.S. National Park Service to limit the number of visitors to key parks such as the Grand Canyon are an example of efforts to limit the likelihood of loving nature to death.

Answer 2

Students answering this question should be encouraged to consider tourism in their hometown. Through application of the definition of sustainability, encourage them to explain instances of short-term and long-term impacts.

Answer 3

Japan is a very expensive place to visit not only because it is so far away from most able-bodied tourists which means high airfares but its goods and tourist services tend to be more expensive than those found in Europe and the United States. On the other hand, Japan is a rich country in terms of per capita income so Japanese make many more overseas trips out of Japan than visitors do to Japan.
