The limits of acceptable change (LAC) framework is a planning approach used to determine an area's carrying capacity based on what conditions are desired. It is used most often to support communities and related organizations, dependent upon natural resources, in their planning for area tourism products and experiences.

Butler's tourism area life cycle comprises the following five stages: 1. exploration; 2. involvement; 3. development; 4. consolidation; and 5. stagnation leading to either rejuvenation or decline.
