The main impediment in the way of accurate travel and tourism statistics involves poor and narrow methods for collecting basic data. Adopting worldwide collection standards and increased funding for measuring tourism flows especially in less-developed countries would increase accuracy.

An important outcome of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro was Agenda 21 which was later applied specifically to tourism in the report, Agenda 21 for the Travel and Tourism Industry: Towards Environmentally Sustainable Development.
