Thomas Cook, an English parson, was the seminal figure in bringing travel and tourism to the middle classes through his organization of group tours originally spurred by the advent of the railroads in the early 19th century.

The Grand Tour originated among the English upper class and involved travel, conducted by tutors and guides, throughout continental Europe. The height of popularity for the Grand Tour occurred in the 16th and 17th centuries.
