Eisenhower and many other Republicans were elected while condemning containment as appeasement and promising to roll back communism. But once in office, Ike found that massive expenditures on defense challenged his domestic plans. Ike's solution was to talk about going to the brink but to look for ways of avoiding war through alliances. The American response to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 is a case in point of how the administration stood by while Soviet tanks crushed an anti-Communist revolt.
