Students should have ample evidence of Wilson's idealism. His refusal to negotiate with presumed murderers in Mexico and his efforts to maintain a distance from his allies in World War I are two examples. But the text provides numerous examples of Wilson's use of force. The best single example may be the Veracruz affair, but there are many other examples as well. Wilson's willingness to intervene in World War I put more Americans into action than at any time since the Civil War.
