Answer 1

a

Answer 2

Students should recognize several elements. First, there was a significant number of female workers, especially in the textile industry. Second, there was a growing number of immigrant workers. Finally (and this point may elude many students), workers no longer had the same kind of relationships with their employers. Rather than being apprentices or journeymen who lived in the households of their employers, under their parental eyes, they had an unprecedented degree of autonomy. This, of course, meant that employers were no longer obliged to look out for their workers, thus, permitting some of the most truly degrading conditions in American history.
