Students might begin by comparing how the economies in North and South differed and how these differences were revealed in the very different societies of the two regions. Within these broad categories, students may wish to address how the different social classes changed during this time period. The development of blue-collar and white-collar classes might be one topic, or students could examine the tensions between the planter class and poor farmers in the South.
