Answer 2

Answer: The ideal answer should include:

  • In January 1979, the Iranian people overthrew the longtime authoritarian government of Shah Reza Pahlavi.

  • Returning from exile in Iraq and then Paris, Rhuollah Khomeini created a popular theocracy.

  • The shah took his money and fled Iran. Several months later, President Carter allowed him to enter the United States to seek medical treatment for cancer.

  • The Iranians demanded the shahs extradition. The refusal of this demand led to the storming of the U.S. embassy.

  • Carter refused to give into Iranian pressure to return the shah in exchange for the embassy hostages.

  • A failed military rescue operation only made the situation worse.

  • Not until after the shahs death in 1980 did the two governments finally negotiate the hostages release in January 1981.
