Shana has borderline personality disorder. She is in a therapy session, and tells her therapist she is sick of the suicidal thoughts and gestures she always finds herself engaging in. The therapist replies, I think to give up these kinds of gestures will be very hard. It will probably require a commitment of a year to a therapy program. Can you make that commitment? Of course, Shana replies. I don't want to live like this. Her therapist counters, Then you realize if you committed to a year of therapy, that means you cannot commit suicide or the therapy can't work. Do you understand this? What type of therapy is Shana probably receiving?
