- social impairment involves experiencing key problems in life, such as missing work, due to substance use
- risky use involves using the substance in hazardous situations, such as while driving or having to be in dangerous situations to obtain the drug
- tolerance/withdrawal
- tolerance refers to need to ingest greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same effect
- substance withdrawal refers to maladaptive behavioral and physiological changes when a person stops taking a drug
