 Adaptational failure or unsuccessful adaptation to a developmental task (social, emotional, cognitive, etc.)
 Could include examples of delay, fixation and deviance
 Examples  any reasonable response that connects a typical developmental task (e.g., talking) and a significant variation of that task (e.g., mutism)
