Observe the photograph of an entire forest of trees knocked down on Mt. St. Helens. By contrast this is not the case on Kilauea.

Why were so many trees knocked down during the Mt. St. Helens eruption while that was not true of the Kilauea volcano?
◦ The difference is that Mt. St. Helens produced a lot more ash, and the weight of the ash caused the trees to topple over after a few days.
◦ The force of the blast from Mt. St. Helens caused the trees to be knocked over, while the Kilauea volcano was much less violent.
◦ Every volcanic eruption knocks down trees. There are no trees in Hawaii but there trees are near Mt. St. Helens, so that explains the difference.
◦ The force of the blast at Kilauea vaporized all the trees, as Hawaiian volcanoes are significantly more powerful than Mt. St. Helens.

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.

Dogs have been used in studies to detect various cancers in human subjects. They have been trained to sniff breath samples from humans that were collected by having them breathe into special tubes. These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
