Your son, who is in middle childhood, made it to the next round of the annual spelling bee, even though his best friend who studied with him did not. What is his likely response?
◦ He would be enormously happy that he made it. He worked hard to get to the next round.
◦ He would be enormously sad that his study partner did not make it to the next round and would not be able to find any joy in making it himself.
◦ He would have mixed emotions. He would be happy that he made it, but also sad that his study partner did not.
◦ He would probably not express much in the way of emotions, as children in middle childhood are not very emotionally mature or responsive.

Though methadone is often used to treat dependency on other opioids, the drug itself can be abused. Crushing or snorting methadone can achieve the opiate "rush" desired by addicts. Improper use such as these can lead to a dangerous dependency on methadone. This drug now accounts for nearly one-third of opioid-related deaths.
