Question 1

Of Sn2+, Ag+, and/or Zn2+, which could be reduced by Cu?

Sn2+

Ag+

Zn2+

Two of them could be reduced by Cu.
All of them could be reduced by Cu.

Question 2

Refer to the galvanic cell below (the contents of each half-cell are written beneath each compartment):

0.10 M MnO4                           0.40 M Cr3+
0.20 M Mn2+                             0.30 M Cr2O72–
0.010 M H+                              0.010 M H+
The standard reduction potentials are as follows:
MnO4 + 8H+ + 5e→ Mn2+ + 4H2O, E° = 1.51 V
Cr2O72– + 14H+ + 6e→ 2Cr3+ + 7H2O, E° = 1.33 V

When current is allowed to flow, which species is oxidized?

Reference: 18-3

Cr2O72–
Cr3+
MnO4
Mn2+
H+

Although the Roman numeral for the number 4 has always been taught to have been "IV," according to historians, the ancient Romans probably used "IIII" most of the time. This is partially backed up by the fact that early grandfather clocks displayed IIII for the number 4 instead of IV. Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.
