Answer to Question 1

The long-term outcome for autistic disorder is variable. In one controlled longitudinal study, 46 of children who were diagnosed with autistic disorder had a poor outcome as young adults while 53 had fair to good/very good outcomes as young adults. IQ remained stable from childhood to adulthood. Emotional problems were present among 62 of the sample. Only 27 of the participants had ever been employed, for an average of 5 hours per week and most often in sheltered workshops. Fifty-six percent were living at home while 35 lived in a group home or foster care.
