Answer to Question 1

Abnormal behavior must be understood within the context of social and cultural forces. Examples of these include gender, social class, and interpersonal resources. Gender roles determine the cultural expression of what is acceptable for each gender. Social factors such as hunger, work, and domestic violence for women make them more vulnerable as a group for the development of a psychological disorder. Socioeconomic status may affect the area in which one lives and one's vulnerability to negative situations or events. For example, Hurricane Andrew hit a low-income area, resulting in higher rates of PTSD for Hispanic and African American children compared with white children. Social support in form of neighbors and friends is disrupted as people are scattered during a natural disaster.
