Why are some exciting experiences in life (such as moving into a first apartment, getting married, or celebrating holidays) considered stressful?
◦ Although they may be unpredictable, these events are usually perceived as a short-term challenge to conquer, and therefore result in eustress.
◦ The stressor/stress ratio associated with these events exceeds the theoretical maximum for successfully coping with these events.
◦ Many aspects of these experiences are beyond a person's control, and uncontrollable events are always perceived as a source of distress.
◦ Physiologically, excitement and stress activate the same biological mechanisms, and individuals under stress can't psychologically differentiate the two.
