Why is it necessary to adjust the individual confidence level of each confidence interval for a multiple comparison of means procedure?

The total probability of the \(\style{font-family:Times New Roman;}{\left(\begin{array}{c}k\\2\end{array}\right)}\) intervals being correct will always be less than the probability of any single confidence interval covering a single mean difference.

Each confidence interval is slightly biased and the correction will alleviate that bias.

The \(\style{font-family:Times New Roman;}{\left(\begin{array}{c}k\\2\end{array}\right)}\) intervals will not be able to detect slight differences in means without a correction.

Confidence intervals are always estimates; so, when considering \(\style{font-family:Times New Roman;}{\left(\begin{array}{c}k\\2\end{array}\right)}\) of them, an adjustment is needed to allow for valid inference.

Ether was used widely for surgeries but became less popular because of its flammability and its tendency to cause vomiting. In England, it was quickly replaced by chloroform, but this agent caused many deaths and lost popularity.

Your skin wrinkles if you stay in the bathtub a long time because the outermost layer of skin (which consists of dead keratin) swells when it absorbs water. It is tightly attached to the skin below it, so it compensates for the increased area by wrinkling. This happens to the hands and feet because they have the thickest layer of dead keratin cells.

After a vasectomy, it takes about 12 ejaculations to clear out sperm that were already beyond the blocked area.

For high blood pressure (hypertension), a new class of drug, called a vasopeptidase blocker (inhibitor), has been developed. It decreases blood pressure by simultaneously dilating the peripheral arteries and increasing the body's loss of salt.

Before a vaccine is licensed in the USA, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reviews it for safety and effectiveness. The CDC then reviews all studies again, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Every lot of vaccine is tested before administration to the public, and the FDA regularly inspects vaccine manufacturers' facilities.
