C

Answer to Question 2

Relapses in an exercise routine can lead to the experience of the abstinence violation effect, an effect first studied in people who experienced relapses when trying to stop smoking or abusing drugs or alcohol. The abstinence violation effect is a process whereby a person experiences a relapse back to a previous habit or lifestyle and then uses all-or-nothing thinking to justify abandonment of the newly adopted lifestyle. For example, a person might use the following self-talk. I haven't exercised now for the past week. I've failed. This isn't working. So I might as well give up trying to exercise..
