Answer to Question 1

Berk (2007, p. 404) concludes upon reviewing the relevant research for adolescent identity development, that a strong, secure ethnic identity is associated with higher self-esteem, optimism, sense of mastery over the environment, and more positive attitudes toward one's ethnicity.. She further notes that minority adolescents with strong ethnic identities cope with stress better, achieve more in school, and are better adjusted than their counterparts who have weak ethnic identities. Therefore, although maintaining a secure ethnic identity has its drawbacks in that it can emphasize differences; it also has benefits such as promoting positive well-being, adjustment, and achievement.

Answer to Question 2

Jones notes that the central challenge of bicultural adaptation is to maintain loyalty and connection to one's culture of origin, while also participating in a personally meaningful way in the broader society..
